Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are trained to treat and diagnose defects, injuries and diseases of the mouth, jaw, teeth, neck, gums and other soft tissues of the head. These dental specialists have completed 4 years of dental school plus a 4-year surgical hospital residency.

The American Dental Association and similar associations worldwide recognize oral and maxillofacial surgery as a subspecialty.

Oral surgeons commonly remove wisdom teeth, treat facial pain, install dental implants, treat temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ), and remove tumors and cysts. They also offer reconstructive surgery to correct the effects of facial trauma or for other aesthetic reasons. Oral surgeons have advanced training in anesthesia, so they can provide an extreme level of patient comfort in the safety of the office.

As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon, John V. Vecchione, DDS, is trained in both medicine and dentistry. He offers the full scope of oral and maxillofacial surgery services at his Budd Lake, NJ, practice.
